Tunupa is a prominent volcano located on the shores of the Salar de Uyuni, towering over one of Bolivia’s most iconic landscapes. Although not technically difficult, the ascent involves a steady climb to high altitude and offers a unique combination of volcanic terrain and vast open landscapes. From the summit, you are rewarded with exceptional panoramic views over the Salar de Uyuni and Coipasa, the surrounding volcanoes, and the Altiplano, making Tunupa a unique and memorable experience in the highlands.

Details

The ascent to Tunupa is a trek that follows a gradual route over volcanic terrain, leading to panoramic views of the Salar de Uyuni and Coipasa, although it is not usually possible to reach the summit due to its difficult access. The highest point that can be reached is the white viewpoint, and no technical equipment is required.

Day 1.
Uyuni – Salar – Tahua

Departure from Uyuni to the Train Cemetery, 5 minutes from the city, then we visit the village of Colchani to see the salt processing, handicrafts, and a small salt museum. Next, we visit the Uyuni Salt Flats where we will see the salt piles, visit the eyes of the salt flats, the Playa Blanca salt hotel (first salt hotel, museum), visit to Incahuasi Island where we will observe the beautiful giant cacti and climb to the top of the island to contemplate the imposing Uyuni Salt Flat in its entirety and also the place where we will have lunch. Finally, we head to the small community of Coquesa located at the foot of the Tunupa Volcano and finally we head to Tahua where we will spend the night.

Day 2.
Tahua – Tunupa Volcano

Early morning departure and we drive as close as possible to begin the hike and climb to the summit of Tunupa Volcano. Our highest point will be the Blanco viewpoint at 5,110m, where we will have views of the Uyuni Salt Flats and the Coquesa Salt Flats.
Then we return to Tahua for lunch and rest, and finally spend the night there.

Day 3.
Tahua – Uyuni

Today is a very quiet day. After breakfast, we head back to Uyuni to finish the tour.
